Why Black Cumin (Nigella)?
Nigella produces charming, feathery foliage followed by delicate pale blue to white flowers that develop into attractive seed pods filled with fragrant black seeds.
Known as Black Cumin or Black Seed, these seeds have a warm, peppery flavour with hints of onion and oregano, making them a popular spice in breads, curries, pickles, and Middle Eastern cuisine. They have also been valued in traditional herbal medicine for generations.

How to Grow Good Black Cumin
Soil & Site: Prefers well-drained soil in full sun. Grows well in average garden soil and tolerates dry conditions once established.
Sowing: Direct sow in spring or autumn where winters are mild. Sow seeds 5 mm deep and thin seedlings to 15–20 cm apart.
Care: Water regularly while seedlings establish, then only during prolonged dry periods. Plants require very little maintenance.
Harvest: Allow the seed pods to mature and dry on the plant before harvesting. Cut the pods and finish drying indoors before collecting the seeds.
Tip: Leave a few seed pods to naturally self-sow, and you’ll often enjoy a fresh crop the following season with very little effort.
