Bring Sweetness and Healing to Your Garden

Add elegance and traditional herbal wisdom with Meadowsweet crowns. This graceful perennial forms clumps of deeply veined, fern-like green leaves and produces tall, feathery plumes of creamy-white flowers in mid to late summer. The flowers have a delightful sweet, almond-honey fragrance that fills the air — especially on warm evenings.

Meadowsweet is a classic cottage garden and herb garden plant, thriving in moist spots where many other plants struggle. Perfect for damp borders, pond edges, bog gardens, and wildlife-friendly areas.

Traditional & Medicinal Uses

Meadowsweet has a long, respected history in European herbal medicine:

  • Pain & Inflammation Relief: Contains natural salicylates (the original source of aspirin). Traditionally used for headaches, fever, joint pain, arthritis, and muscle aches.
  • Digestive Support: Soothes stomach acidity, heartburn, ulcers, and diarrhoea. Often called “the herbal antacid” for its balancing effect on the digestive system.
  • Fever & Cold Relief: Gentle diaphoretic that helps reduce fevers and supports the body during colds and flu.
  • Skin & Wound Care: Used externally in washes or salves for minor skin irritations and inflammation.
  • Other Traditional Uses: General tonic, urinary support, and gout relief.

Note: Because it contains salicylates, use with caution if you are sensitive to aspirin, pregnant, or on blood-thinning medication. Always consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider before using medicinally.

Why Grow Meadowsweet?

  • Beautiful, sweetly scented flowers loved by bees and pollinators
  • Excellent for damp or heavy soils
  • Tall, architectural presence in the garden
  • Hardy perennial that returns stronger each year
  • Valuable traditional medicinal herb
  • Deer resistant and low-maintenance once established

Ideal for New Zealand: Thrives in the cool, moist climate of Canterbury and other temperate regions.

How to Grow Meadowsweet Crowns

Planting:

  • Plant crowns in spring or autumn.
  • Set crowns just below soil level, spacing 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Soil & Care:

  • Prefers moist to wet, fertile soil (loves clay and heavy soils that hold moisture).
  • Full sun to partial shade.
  • Keep consistently moist — ideal near water features or in damp garden beds. Mulch to retain moisture.
  • Low-maintenance. Cut back spent flower stalks after blooming.

Growth & Harvest:

  • Height: 90–150 cm (3–5 feet)
  • Spread: 45–60 cm
  • Blooms: Mid to late summer (creamy-white fragrant plumes)
  • Harvest: Pick leaves and flowers during bloom for teas and preparations. Roots can also be used but are less common.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to keep plants vigorous.

Meadowsweet is a tough, rewarding perennial that’s surprisingly easy in the right spot.
