How to Grow Good Florence Fennel
- Soil & Site: Rich, well-drained soil in full sun. Avoid dry or very hot conditions.
- Sowing: Sow direct in late spring or early summer (or start indoors). Space seeds 1 cm apart and thin to 20–30 cm between plants.
- Care: Keep soil consistently moist to prevent bolting. Hill soil around developing bulbs for extra whiteness and tenderness if desired.
- Harvest: Cut bulbs at the base when they reach 7–10 cm across. Younger bulbs are more tender; larger ones develop stronger flavour.
- Tip: Succession sow every few weeks for a longer harvest window. Provide shade in extreme heat.
