Traditional & Medicinal Uses

Echinacea is one of the most well-known and researched medicinal herbs in the Western world:

  • Immune System Support: Traditionally used to strengthen the immune response, reduce the severity and duration of colds, flu, and upper respiratory infections.
  • Infection Fighter: Antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Often used at the first sign of illness.
  • Wound Healing & Skin Care: Applied externally for minor wounds, burns, skin infections, eczema, and insect bites.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Helps with sore throats, swollen glands, and general inflammation.
  • Other Traditional Uses: Blood purification, support for allergies, and as a general tonic for overall vitality.

Parts Used: Roots (strongest), leaves, and flowers — all can be used fresh or dried for teas, tinctures, and salves.

Note: Always consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider before using Echinacea medicinally, especially if you have autoimmune conditions or are on immunosuppressant medication.

How to Grow Purple Echinacea Crowns

Planting:

  • Plant crowns in spring or autumn.
  • Set crowns just below soil level, spacing 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart.
  • Water well after planting.

Soil & Care:

  • Prefers well-drained, average to fertile soil (avoid overly rich soil to prevent floppy growth).
  • Full sun (at least 6 hours) for best flowering.
  • Drought tolerant once established — water regularly in the first season.
  • Low maintenance. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms, or leave them for seed-eating birds.

Growth & Harvest:

  • Height: 60–120 cm (24–48 inches)
  • Spread: 45–60 cm
  • Blooms: Midsummer to autumn (vibrant purple-pink flowers)
  • Harvest: Cut flowers and leaves during bloom. Roots are best harvested in autumn from the second or third year.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

Echinacea is easy to grow and very rewarding — an excellent choice for beginner and experienced gardeners alike.
