How to Grow Bare-Rooted Waiau Raspberry (Winter Only)

Planting:

  • Plant bare-root canes in winter (June–August) while fully dormant.
  • Soak roots in water for 1–2 hours before planting.
  • Plant 5–8 cm deeper than the soil mark on the cane.
  • Space plants 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart in rows 1.5–2 m apart.
  • Water well and mulch thickly after planting.

Soil & Care:

  • Prefers fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter.
  • Full sun (at least 6 hours) for best yields.
  • Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year.
  • Support canes with wires or a trellis.

Growth & Harvest:

  • Height: 1.5–2 metres (with support)
  • Fruiting: Early to mid summer (main crop)
  • Harvest: Pick berries when fully coloured and sweet.
  • Prune spent canes after harvest (summer-bearing type). Leave strong new canes for next season.
  • Very cold hardy.

Note: These are bare-root dormant canes. They will leaf out beautifully in spring.
