Beautiful Perennial Chilli Pepper
Grow Rocoto Peppers, one of the oldest cultivated chilli varieties in the world. Unlike most chillies, Rocotos are true perennials in frost-free climates, producing heavy crops of juicy, thick-walled fruits year after year.
Why Rocoto Peppers?
Rocoto peppers (Capsicum pubescens) are prized for their crisp, succulent flesh, medium to hot heat, and outstanding flavour. Their distinctive black seeds, vibrant purple flowers, and fuzzy leaves make them unlike any other chilli. In mild climates they can grow into large, long-lived shrubs, rewarding gardeners with abundant harvests season after season.

How to Grow Good Rocoto Peppers
Soil & Site: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or light afternoon shade. Rocotos prefer cooler conditions than most chillies and appreciate protection from extreme heat and strong winds.
Sowing: Start seeds indoors 8–12 weeks before your last frost. Keep the soil warm (22–28°C) and evenly moist during germination, which can take 2–6 weeks. Transplant once all danger of frost has passed.
Care: Water regularly and feed throughout the growing season for the best yields. Support larger plants if needed, and protect from frost in cooler regions. In suitable climates, plants can live and produce for many years.
Harvest: Pick fruits once they reach their mature colour—typically bright red, orange, or yellow depending on the strain. Regular harvesting encourages continued fruit production.
Tip: Rocotos naturally thrive in cooler highland conditions, making them an excellent choice for gardeners who struggle to grow traditional hot peppers in cooler climates.
