How to Grow Good Onions
- Soil & Site: Plant in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Choose a sunny, open spot.
- Planting: Sow seeds indoors in early spring or direct sow once the soil warms. Thin seedlings to 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart in rows.
- Care: Keep well-watered during early growth, then ease off as bulbs form. Weed regularly and avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen.
- Harvest: Lift bulbs when tops yellow and fall over. Cure in a warm, dry, airy place for 2–3 weeks.
