How to Grow Thyme Crowns

Planting:

  • Plant crowns or divisions in spring or autumn.
  • Set crowns just at or slightly above soil level, spacing 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart.
  • Water well after planting.

Soil & Care:

  • Prefers well-drained, poor to average, slightly alkaline soil (avoid rich, wet soil).
  • Full sun for best flavour and growth.
  • Very drought tolerant once established — water sparingly.
  • Trim lightly after flowering to keep plants compact and encourage fresh growth.

Growth & Harvest:

  • Height: 15–30 cm (6–12 inches)
  • Spread: 30–45 cm
  • Blooms: Summer (small pink/lilac flowers)
  • Harvest: Pick sprigs as needed throughout the year. Flavour is strongest just before flowering. Dry bunches for winter use.
  • Replace or rejuvenate plants every 3–4 years as they can become woody.

Thyme is tough, forgiving, and incredibly useful in the kitchen and garden.
