How to Grow Strawberry ‘Kiwi Giant’ Bare Root Crowns
Planting:
- Plant bare root crowns in autumn or early spring.
- Set crowns so the crown sits at soil level (not buried, not too high).
- Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart in rows 60–75 cm apart.
- Water well after planting and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Soil & Care:
- Prefers fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter.
- Full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily) for best fruit production.
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Feed with compost or a balanced fertiliser in spring and after first harvest.
Growth & Harvest:
- Height: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches)
- Spread: Forms clumps and runners
- Fruiting: Main crop in late spring/summer (may have repeat flushes)
- Harvest: Pick ripe berries in the morning when fully red. Regular picking encourages more fruit.
- Runner Management: Allow some runners to root for new plants or remove for larger main-crop berries.
- Protect from birds with netting if needed. Replace plants every 3–4 years for peak production.
