What are Potato Onions? A Rare Perennial Gem!
Potato onions (also known as multiplier onions or nesting onions) are a wonderful, somewhat rare perennial vegetable. Plant a single bulb and it multiplies into a cluster of 5 to 20 new onions.
They are incredibly resilient, boast a rich and intense flavour, store far longer than shallots, and are propagated entirely by replanting the bulbs rather than growing from seed.
How to Grow Potato Onions
When to plant:
Plant your bulbs from May to July (mid-winter), when they naturally enter dormancy.
Spacing:
Plant individual bulbs 15 to 20 cm apart in light, well-draining soil that has been enriched with compost or fertiliser.
Growth:
The buried bulb sends up green shoots while multiplying underground, eventually forming a clump that pushes up toward the soil surface.
Harvest:
Harvest the mature clusters between December and January, once the foliage starts to yellow and die back.
After harvesting, simply separate the new bulbs and replant the healthiest ones to keep the cycle going year after year.
Ships as bulbs, fresh and ready to plant. Grown organically with love in Clutha, New Zealand.
