Grow Your Own Never-Ending Supply of Leeks
Add a true perennial vegetable to your garden with Perennial Leeks (also known as multiplier leeks or wild leeks). These tough, clumping plants produce mild, sweet leeks year after year without needing to replant.
They form attractive clumps of thick, blanched stems and flat, blue-green leaves. In their second year, they send up tall flower stalks with beautiful globe-like purple-white flowers that attract bees. Perfect for vegetable gardens, food forests, perennial borders, and edible landscapes.
Once established, you can harvest stems continuously while the clump keeps multiplying — a low-effort staple for soups, sautés, roasts, and salads.

Culinary & Traditional Uses
- Culinary: Milder and sweeter than regular onions or annual leeks. Use the thick white shanks and tender green leaves raw in salads, or cooked in soups, quiches, stir-fries, potato-leek soup, and roasted dishes. The small bulbils (offsets) can be used like spring onions.
- Nutritional: Rich in vitamins A, C, K, folate, iron, and manganese. Contains beneficial sulfur compounds and antioxidants.
- Traditional & Medicinal: Like other Alliums, leeks have been used historically for:
- Supporting respiratory health and clearing congestion
- Digestive support and as a mild diuretic
- Cardiovascular benefits and reducing inflammation
- Antimicrobial properties for minor infections
Note: A nutritious everyday food vegetable. Consult a healthcare provider for specific medicinal applications.

How to Grow Perennial Leeks
Planting:
- Plant crowns or divisions in autumn or early spring.
- Set them 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep, spacing 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) apart.
- Water well after planting.
Soil & Care:
- Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is best.
- Full sun to light shade.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during establishment. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Low-maintenance — fertilise occasionally with compost or seaweed tea for best yields.
Growth & Harvest:
- Height: 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) including flower stalks.
- Harvest: Pull individual stems as needed (leave the base to regrow) or divide clumps periodically.
- Flowers appear in the second year — harvest bulbils for propagation or let them naturalise.
- Very cold-hardy and suitable for most NZ gardens.
Perennial leeks are forgiving, productive, and one of the easiest perennial vegetables for home gardeners.
