Description

Bocking 14 is a sterile, non-invasive variety of Russian Comfrey (Symphytum x uplandicum).

Listing is for 5 root pieces

Root cuttings are available from May – August each year.

Personally I like to put these in a pot with soil over winter in a warm sheltered place and keep damp and wait for them to sprout in the early spring before planting out

Comfrey is a popular choice in organic gardening and permaculture for its ability to act as a “dynamic accumulator” and mulch producer. The plant pulls nutrients from deep in the soil and generates large quantities of potassium-rich leaves that are excellent for making compost and natural plant fertilizer.

Why Gardeners Love Comfrey

Sterile Hybrid

Unlike wild comfrey, Bocking 14 does not produce viable seeds, so it stays contained and will not spread uncontrollably through your garden.

Nutrient Accumulator

Its deep taproots mine minerals such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium from the subsoil, bringing them up to the surface.

Pollinator Magnet

The plant produces attractive purple bell-shaped flowers that are very appealing to bees.

How to Use Comfrey

Chop & Drop

Cut the plant back to ground level 3–4 times per year. The nitrogen- and potassium-rich leaves can be scattered around fruit trees or vegetable beds, where they break down into natural fertilizer.

Compost Activator

Its high protein and mineral content make it an outstanding green material for compost piles, helping them heat up quickly.

Compost Tea

Soak fresh leaves in a bucket of water for 3–4 weeks to produce a strong, nutrient-dense liquid fertilizer for plants.

Planting & Propagation

Where to Plant

Choose the location carefully. Because of its deep taproot and tough nature, Bocking 14 can be very difficult to remove once established. It grows best in fertile, moist soil but is adaptable to a wide range of conditions.

Propagation

Since it does not produce viable seeds, Bocking 14 must be propagated by root divisions or root cuttings. Even small pieces of root left in the soil can grow into new plants.

Ships as dormant root cuttings, fresh and ready to plant. Grown organically with love in Clutha, New Zealand.
